Cavaler
Un cavaler este o persoană care a primit un titlu onorific de cavaler de către un monarh sau alt lider politic pentru slujirea monarhului sau a țării, în special în capacitate militară. Din punct de vedere istoric, în Europa, luptătorii au fost înzestrați cu cavaleri. În Evul Mediu Înalt, cavalerul era considerat o clasă de nobilime inferioară. În Evul Mediu târziu, rangul devenise asociat cu idealurile cavaleriei, un cod de conduită pentru războinicul creștin rațional. Adesea, un cavaler era un vasal care servea ca luptător pentru un domn, cu plată sub formă de terenuri. Stăpânii aveau încredere în cavaleri, care erau calificați în luptă pe călare. De la începutul perioadei moderne, titlul de cavaler este pur onorific, de obicei atribuit de un monarh, ca și în sistemul britanic de onoare, deseori pentru serviciul non-militar al țării. Din punct de vedere istoric, idealurile cavaleriei au fost popularizate în literatura medievală, în special în materia Marii Britanii și a Materiei din Franța, prima care se bazează pe Historia Regum Britanniae a lui Geoffrey de Monmouth, scrisă în anii '30.

Prima definiție a cavalerului în dicționar este o persoană care a slujit domnului său ca un soldat montat și puternic înarmat. O altă definiție a cavalerului este un domn investit de un rege sau alt domn cu statutul militar și social al acestui rang. Cavalerul este, de asemenea, o persoană investită de un suveran cu rang și demnitate neecredincios, de obicei ca recunoaștere a serviciilor personale, a realizărilor etc. Un cavaler britanic poartă titlul pe care l-a pus înaintea numelui său, ca în Sir Winston Churchill.
