Legea este un termen care nu are o definiție universal acceptată, însă o definiție este că legea este un sistem de reguli și îndrumări care sunt aplicate prin intermediul instituțiilor sociale pentru a guverna comportamentul. Legile pot fi făcute de legiuitori prin legislație, executiv prin decrete și reglementări sau judecători prin precedente obligatorii. Persoanele fizice pot crea contracte obligatorii din punct de vedere juridic, inclusiv acorduri de arbitraj care să excludă procesul obișnuit al instanței. Formarea însăși a legilor poate fi influențată de o constituție și de drepturile enunțate în ea. Legea formează politica, economia și societatea în diferite moduri și servește ca mediator al relațiilor dintre oameni. Se poate face o distincție generală între jurisdicțiile de drept civil, în care legiuitorul sau alt organism central își codifică și consolidează legile și sistemele de drept comun, în care sunt acceptate precedentele obligatorii făcute de judecători. Din punct de vedere istoric, legile religioase au jucat un rol semnificativ chiar și în soluționarea chestiunilor seculare, lucru care se întâmplă în unele comunități religioase, în special evreiești, și în unele țări, în special islamice.

Prima definiție a legii din dicționar este o regulă sau un set de reguli, aplicabile de instanțele judecătorești, care reglementează guvernul unui stat, relația dintre organele guvernului și subiecții statului și relația sau conduita subiectelor față de fiecare. O altă definiție a legii este condiția și controlul impus de astfel de reguli. Legea este, de asemenea, o regulă de conduită.
