O axiomă sau postulatul este o premisă sau punct de plecare al raționamentului. Așa cum a fost conceput în mod clasic, o axiomă este o premisă atât de evidentă încât să fie acceptată ca fiind adevărată fără controverse. Cuvântul vine de la greaca ἀξίωμα (āxīoma) "ceea ce este considerat demn sau potrivit" sau "ceea ce se cuvine ca evident".
