Jurisprudența este studiul și teoria dreptului. Cercetătorii în jurisprudență, cunoscuți și ca teoreticieni legali, speră să obțină o înțelegere mai profundă a naturii legii, a raționamentului juridic, a sistemelor juridice și a instituțiilor juridice. Legislația modernă a început în secolul al XVIII-lea și sa axat pe primele principii ale dreptului natural, ale dreptului civil și ale legilor națiunilor.
