Malignitatea este tendința unei afecțiuni medicale de a deveni progresiv mai rău. Malignitatea este cea mai cunoscută ca o caracterizare a cancerului. O tumoare malignă contrastează cu o tumoare benignă non-canceroasă prin faptul că malignitatea nu este auto-limitată în creșterea ei, este capabilă să invadeze în țesuturile adiacente și poate fi capabilă să se răspândească în țesuturile îndepărtate. O tumoare benignă nu are niciuna dintre aceste proprietăți. Malignitatea în cazurile de cancer este caracterizată prin anaplazie, invazivitate și metastaze. Tumorile maligne sunt, de asemenea, caracterizate de instabilitatea genomului, astfel incat cancerul, asa cum este evaluat prin secventierea genomului intreg, are frecvent intre 10.000 si 100.000 de mutatii in genomul lor intreg.
