Nonconformistul era un termen folosit în Anglia și Țara Galilor, după Actul de uniformitate 1662, referindu-se la un creștin protestant care nu "se conforma" guvernării și uzanțelor Bisericii stabilite a Angliei. Disparatorii englezi care au încălcat actul de uniformitate 1559 pot fi considerați retroactiv ca fiind neconformiști, de obicei prin practicarea sau susținerea unei disidențe radicale, uneori separatiste, față de biserica de stat stabilită. Până la sfârșitul secolului al XIX-lea termenul include creștinii reformați, baptiștii și metodiștii, printre alte grupuri. Din punct de vedere istoric, nonconformistii au fost restrictionati din multe sfere ale vietii publice.
