Patriarh
Inițial, un patriarh a fost un om care a exercitat autoritate autocratică ca pater familias asupra unei familii extinse. Sistemul unei astfel de reguli a familiilor de către bărbații de rang înalt este numit patriarhie. Acesta este un cuvânt grecesc, un compus de πατριά (patria), "lineage, progeny", esp. din partea tatălui (care derivă din cuvântul "πατέρ - patēr", "tată") și ρρχχον ("arhon"), "șef", "conducător", "rege" ca și cei trei patriarhi ai poporului Israel, iar perioada în care au trăit este numită epoca patriarhală. Acesta a dobândit inițial înțelesul religios în versiunea Septuaginte a Bibliei. Astăzi, cuvântul a dobândit semnificații eclesiastice specifice. În special, episcopii de rang înalt din ortodoxia răsăriteană, ortodoxia orientală, biserica catolică (deasupra Marelui Arhiepiscop și primat) și Biserica Asiriană a Estului sunt numiți patriarhi (și, în anumite cazuri, și papi).

O altă definiție a patriarhului este oricare dintre un număr de persoane considerate părinți ai rasei umane, împărțiți în patriarhii antediluviani, de la Adam la Noe și postdiluvieni, de la Noe la Avraam. Patriarhul este, de asemenea, unul dintre cei trei strămoși ai poporului evreu: Avraam, Isaac sau Iacov.
