Penitenţă
Penitența este pocăința păcatelor, precum și numele propriu-zis al Sinodului Romano-Catolic, Creștin Ortodox și Anglican al Pocăinței și Reconciliere / Mărturisire. De asemenea, ea joacă un rol în mărturisirea ne-sacramentală a luteranilor și a altor protestanți. Cuvântul penitență derivă din poenitentia veche franceză și latină, ambele provenind din aceeași rădăcină, ceea ce înseamnă pocăință, dorința de a fi iertat. Penitența și pocăința, asemănătoare în derivarea lor și în sensul original, au ajuns să simbolizeze părerile contradictorii ale esenței pocăinței, care rezultă din controversa față de meritele respective ale "credinței" și ale "faptelor bune". Derivările de cuvinte apar în multe limbi.
