Percepţie
Percepția este organizarea, identificarea și interpretarea informațiilor senzoriale pentru a reprezenta și înțelege mediul. Toate percepțiile implică semnale în sistemul nervos, care la rândul lor rezultă din stimularea fizică sau chimică a organelor de simț. De exemplu, viziunea implică lumina care lovește retina ochiului, mirosul este mediat de moleculele de miros, iar auzul implică valuri de presiune. Percepția nu este recepția pasivă a acestor semnale, ci este formată prin învățare, memorie, așteptare și atenție. Percepția implică aceste efecte "de sus în jos", precum și procesul "de jos în sus" de procesare a intrărilor senzoriale. Procesarea "de jos în sus" transformă informațiile de nivel inferior către informații de nivel superior. Procesul "de sus în jos" se referă la conceptul și așteptările unei persoane și la mecanismele selective care influențează percepția. Percepția depinde de funcțiile complexe ale sistemului nervos, dar subiectiv pare mai multă ușurință deoarece această procesare se desfășoară în afara conștienței conștiente. De la apariția psihologiei experimentale în secolul al XIX-lea, înțelegerea psihologică a percepției a progresat prin combinarea unei varietăți de tehnici.
