Pigment
Un pigment este un material care modifică culoarea luminii reflectate sau transmise ca urmare a absorbției selective a lungimii de undă. Acest proces fizic diferă de fluorescență, fosforescență și alte forme de luminiscență, în care un material emite lumină. Multe materiale absorb selectiv anumite lungimi de undă de lumină. Materialele pe care oamenii le-au ales și dezvoltate pentru a fi utilizate ca pigmenți au de obicei proprietăți speciale care le fac ideale pentru colorarea altor materiale. Un pigment trebuie să aibă o intensitate mare de nuanță față de materialele pe care le culorează. Trebuie să fie stabilă în formă solidă la temperaturi ambiante. Pentru aplicații industriale, precum și în domeniul artelor, permanența și stabilitatea sunt proprietăți dorite. Pigmentele care nu sunt permanente sunt numite fugitive. Fugitive pigmenți se estompeze în timp, sau cu expunerea la lumină, în timp ce unele în cele din urmă înnegri. Pigmenții sunt utilizați pentru colorarea vopselei, a cernelei, a plasticului, a țesăturilor, a produselor cosmetice, a alimentelor și a altor materiale.
