Un pneumotorax este o colecție anormală de aer sau gaz în spațiul pleural care separă plămânul de peretele toracic. Ca efuziune pleurală, pneumotoraxul poate interfera cu respirația normală. Un pneumotorax primar este unul care are loc fără o cauză aparentă și în absența unei boli pulmonare semnificative, în timp ce un pneumotorax secundar apare în prezența patologiei pulmonare existente.
