Prepozițiile sunt o clasă distinctă de cuvinte, ale căror membri cei mai centrați exprimă relații spațiale sau temporale sau servesc la marcarea diferitelor funcții sintactice și a rolurilor semantice. În sensul că funcția primară este relațională, o prepoziție se combină de regulă cu un alt constituent pentru a forma o expresie prepozițională, care se referă la complementul contextului în care apare fraza. Cuvântul preposition vine din latină, o limbă în care un astfel de cuvânt este, de obicei, plasat înaintea complementului său, astfel că este "pre-poziționat". Limba engleză este o altă limbă, deși nu există nici o cerință ca prepositionul să precede o completare. În multe limbi, cu această funcție gramaticală, cuvântul vine după, nu înainte, complementul. Astfel de cuvinte sunt numite, în mod obișnuit, postpoziții. În mod similar, circumsolurile constau din două părți care apar pe fiecare parte a complementului. Termenul tehnic folosit pentru a face referire colectiv la prepositions, postpositions, and circumpositions este adaptare.
