Răscumpărarea este practica de a deține un deținut sau un element pentru a extrage bani sau bunuri pentru a asigura eliberarea lor, sau se poate referi la suma banilor implicați. Într-o lege germană timpurie, un concept similar a fost numit weregild. Atunci când răscumpărarea înseamnă "plată", cuvântul vine prin intermediul ranconului francez din limba latină redemptio = "cumpărare înapoi": comparați "răscumpărare". În răscumpărarea iudaismului se numește kofer-nefesh. Printre alte utilizări, cuvântul a fost aplicat taxei de sondaj de jumătate de siclă care trebuie plătită de fiecare bărbat de peste douăzeci de ani la recensământ.
