O temperatură este o măsură numerică a temperaturii calde și reci. Măsurarea este prin detectarea radiației căldurii, a vitezei particulelor, a energiei cinetice sau cel mai frecvent prin comportamentul în vrac al unui material termometric. Aceasta poate fi calibrată în oricare dintre diferitele scale de temperatură, Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin etc. Măsurătorile cu un mic termometru sau prin detectarea radiației termice pot arăta că temperatura unui corp de material poate varia periodic și de la loc de a intra în ea. Dacă schimbările au loc prea repede sau cu un spațiu prea mic, în interiorul unui corp, ar putea fi imposibil să se definească temperatura. Astfel, conceptul de temperatură în general are un conținut empiric. Într-un corp care nu schimbă nici o energie sau materie cu împrejurimile sale, temperatura tinde să devină uniformă din punct de vedere spațial pe măsură ce timpul trece. Când o cale permeabilă doar la căldură este deschisă între două corpuri, energia se transferă întotdeauna spontan, ca o căldură de la un corp fierbinte la unul mai rece. Rata de transfer depinde de natura traseului. Dacă acestea sunt conectate printr-o cale permeabilă doar la căldură, și nu există căldură între ele, atunci cele două corpuri sunt la fel de calde.
