O tradiție este o credință sau un comportament transferat într-un grup sau într-o societate cu semnificație simbolică sau o semnificație specială cu origini în trecut. Printre exemplele obișnuite se numără sărbătorile sau hainele nepractice dar semnificative din punct de vedere social, însă ideea a fost aplicată și normelor sociale, cum ar fi saluturile. Tradițiile pot persista și evolua de mii de ani - cuvântul "tradiție" în sine derivă din traderul sau comerciantul latin care înseamnă să transmită, să predea, să dea pentru păstrare. Deși se presupune că tradițiile au istorie veche, multe tradiții au fost inventate cu intenție, fie că sunt politice sau culturale, pe perioade scurte de timp. Anumite domenii științifice, cum ar fi antropologia și biologia, au adaptat termenul "tradiție", definind-o mai precis decât utilizarea sa convențională pentru a facilita discursul științific.
