Polyphonie
Dans la musique, la polyphonie est une texture composée de deux ou plusieurs lignes simultanées de mélodie indépendante, par opposition à la musique avec une seule voix ou une musique avec une voix mélodique dominante accompagnée d'accords. Dans le contexte de la tradition musicale occidentale, le terme est généralement utilisé pour désigner la musique de la fin du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance. Les formes baroques telles que la fugue, qu'on pourrait appeler polyphonique, sont habituellement décrites comme contrapuntiques. En outre, par opposition à la terminologie des espèces de contrepoint, la polyphonie était généralement "pitch-against-pitch" / "point-contre-point" ou "soutenu" dans une partie avec des mélismes de différentes longueurs dans une autre. Dans tous les cas, la conception était probablement ce que Margaret Bent appelle «contrepoint dyadique», chaque partie étant écrite en général contre une autre partie, avec toutes les parties modifiées si nécessaire à la fin. Cette conception point-à-point est opposée à la «composition successive», où les voix ont été écrites dans un ordre avec chaque nouvelle connexion vocale dans l'ensemble construit jusqu'à présent, ce qui était précédemment supposé.
