L'aviron, souvent désigné comme équipage aux États-Unis, est un sport dont les origines remontent à l'époque égyptienne antique. Il est basé sur la propulsion d'un bateau sur l'eau à l'aide de rameaux. En poussant contre l'eau avec un rameau, une force est générée pour déplacer le bateau. Le sport peut être soit récréatif - en mettant l'accent sur l'apprentissage de la technique de l'aviron, soit de la compétitivité - où les athlètes courent les uns contre les autres dans les bateaux. Il existe un certain nombre de classes de bateaux différentes dans lesquelles les athlètes rivalisent, allant d'une coquille individuelle à une coquille de huit personnes avec coxswain. L'aviron moderne en tant que sport de compétition remonte au début du 18ème siècle où des courses se sont déroulées entre des hommes d'eau professionnels sur la Tamise à Londres, Royaume-Uni. Souvent, des prix ont été offerts par London Guilds et Livery Companies. La compétition amateur a commencé vers la fin du 18ème siècle avec l'arrivée de «clubs de bateaux» dans les écoles publiques britanniques du collège Eton et de l'école Westminster. De même, des clubs ont été formés à l'Université d'Oxford, avec une course entre Brasenose College et Jesus College en 1815. Rowing, often referred to as crew in the United States, is a sport with origins back to Ancient Egyptian times. It is based on propelling a boat on water using oars. By pushing against the water with an oar, a force is generated to move the boat. The sport can be either recreational - focusing on learning the technique of rowing, or competitive - where athletes race against each other in boats. There are a number of different boat classes in which athletes compete, ranging from an individual shell to an eight person shell with coxswain. Modern rowing as a competitive sport can be traced to the early 18th century when races were held between professional watermen on the River Thames in London, United Kingdom. Often prizes were offered by the London Guilds and Livery Companies. Amateur competition began towards the end of the 18th century with the arrival of "boat clubs" at the British public schools of Eton College and Westminster School. Similarly, clubs were formed at the University of Oxford, with a race held between Brasenose College and Jesus College in 1815. At the University of Cambridge the first recorded races were in 1827.
