Tension (physique)
En physique, la tension décrit la force de traction exercée par chaque extrémité d'une chaîne, d'un câble, d'une chaîne ou d'un objet continu unidimensionnel similaire, ou par chaque extrémité d'une tige, d'un élément de treillis ou d'un objet tridimensionnel similaire. Au niveau atomique, la tension est produite lorsque des atomes ou des molécules sont séparés l'un de l'autre et gagnent de l'énergie potentielle électromagnétique. Chaque extrémité d'une chaîne ou d'une tige sous tension entraînera l'objet auquel elle est attachée, pour restaurer la chaîne / la tige à sa longueur décontractée. La tension est contraire à la compression. Bien que les termes de la physique, le relâchement et la tension ne soient pas utilisés lorsque l'on parle d'escrime, par exemple. En physique, bien que la tension ne soit pas une force, elle possède les unités de force et peut être mesurée en newtons. Les extrémités d'une chaîne ou d'un autre objet sous tension exercent des forces sur les objets auxquels la chaîne ou la tige est connectée, dans la direction de la chaîne au point de fixation. Ces forces liées à la tension sont souvent appelées "forces de tension".
