Un sphinx est une créature mythique avec, au minimum, le corps d'un lion et d'une tête humaine. Dans la tradition grecque, il y a les hanches d'un lion, parfois avec les ailes d'un grand oiseau, et le visage d'un humain. Il est mythisé comme traître et sans merci. En outre, le sphinx égyptien a été considéré comme bienveillant, mais ayant une force féroce semblable à la version grecque malveillante et ont tous deux été considérés comme un gardien qui flanquait souvent les entrées des temples. Dans l'art décoratif européen, le sphinx a connu un renouveau majeur au cours de la Renaissance. Plus tard, l'image du sphinx, quelque chose de très similaire au concept ancien égyptien ancien, a été exportée dans de nombreuses autres cultures, bien que souvent interprétées différemment en raison des traductions des descriptions des originaux et de l'évolution du concept par rapport à d'autres traditions culturelles.
