Conclavul papal
O conclavă papală este o întâlnire a Colegiului Cardinalilor convocată pentru a alege un nou episcop al Romei, cunoscut și ca Papa. Papa este considerat de către romano-catolici ca fiind succesorul apostolic al Sfântului Petru și capul pământesc al Bisericii Romano-Catolice. Conclavul a fost procedura de alegere a papei pentru mai mult de jumătate din timpul în care biserica a existat și este cea mai veche metodă de alegere a conducătorului unei instituții. O istorie a amestecării politice în selecția papală și, prin urmare, a vacanțelor lungi între papi, culminând cu interregnumul din 1268-1271, ia determinat pe Papa Grigore X să declare în timpul celui de-al doilea Consiliu al Lyonului în 1274 că alegătorii cardinali ar trebui să fie încuiate în izolare cum clave și nu avea voie să plece până când nu fusese ales un nou episcop al Romei. Concluziile sunt acum ținute în Capela Sixtină a Palatului Apostolic. De la epoca apostolică, episcopul Romei, ca și alți episcopi, a fost ales prin consensul clericilor și laicilor diecezei. Corpul de alegători a fost definit mai precis atunci când, în 1059, Colegiul Cardinalilor a fost desemnat unicul corp de alegători.
