From Old French contrée, from Medieval Latin contrāta, literally: that which lies opposite, from Latin contrā opposite.
CE ÎNSEAMNĂ COUNTRY ÎN ENGLEZĂ?
Țară
O țară este o regiune identificată ca o entitate distinctă în geografia politică. O țară poate fi un stat suveran independent sau unul ocupat de alt stat, ca o diviziune politică non-suverană sau anterior suverană sau o regiune geografică asociată cu seturi de popoare anterioare sau independente, cu caracteristici politice distincte. Indiferent de geografia fizică, în definiția legală acceptată la nivel internațional, definită de Liga Națiunilor în 1937 și reafirmată de Națiunile Unite în 1945, un rezident al unei țări este supus exercitării independente a jurisdicției. Uneori cuvântul țară este folosit pentru a se referi atât la statele suverane, cât și la alte entități politice, în timp ce alteori se referă numai la state. De exemplu, CIA World Factbook folosește cuvântul în câmpul "Numele țării" pentru a se referi la "o mare varietate de dependențe, zone de suveranitate specială, insule nelocuite și alte entități în plus față de țările tradiționale sau de statele independente".
