Diptic
Un diptic este orice obiect cu două plăci plate atașate la o balama. Dispozitivele acestei forme erau destul de populare în lumea antică, tabletele de ceară fiind acoperite cu ceară pe fețele interioare, pentru înregistrarea notelor și pentru măsurarea timpului și direcției. În antichitate târzie, dipticele din fildeș cu capace sculptate în relief redus pe fețele exterioare erau o formă artistică semnificativă: "diptilul consular" a fost făcut să sărbătorească un consul roman devenind un individ, dar unii, probabil inclusiv dipticul Poet și Muse la Monza , poate fi făcută pentru uz privat. Unele dintre cele mai importante lucrări supraviețuitoare ale Imperiului târziu românesc sunt dipticele, din care supraviețuiesc câteva zeci, păstrate în unele cazuri prin inversare și reutilizare ca cărți. Cel mai mare panou de fildeș bizantin supraviețuitor, este o frunză dintr-un diptic în maniera instanței lui Justinian din c. 525-50, care are un arhanghel. Din Evul Mediu, multe tablouri de panouri au luat forma diptilă, ca mici lucrări portabile pentru uz personal; altarele mari au avut tendința de a fi realizate în formă de tripolit, cu două panouri exterioare care ar putea fi închise prin reprezentarea centrală principală.
