Natură
Natura, în sensul cel mai larg, este echivalentă cu lumea naturală, fizică sau materială sau cu universul. "Natura" se referă la fenomenele lumii fizice și la viața în general. Se situează în scară de la subatom la cosmic. Cuvântul natură este derivat din cuvântul latin natura, sau "calități esențiale, dispoziție înnăscută", iar în antichitate literalmente însemna "naștere". Natura a fost o traducere în latină a cuvântului grecesc physis, care inițial se referea la caracteristicile intrinseci pe care plantele, animalele și alte trăsături ale lumii o dezvoltă de sine stătător. Conceptul de natură ca întreg, universul fizic, este una dintre mai multe expansiuni ale noțiunii inițiale; a început cu anumite aplicații de bază ale cuvântului φύσις de către filozofii pre-socrați și a câștigat în continuare valută de atunci. Această utilizare a continuat în timpul apariției metodei științifice moderne în ultimele câteva secole. În cadrul diverselor utilizări ale cuvântului de astăzi, "natura" se referă adesea la geologie și faunei sălbatice.
