Patronatul este sprijinul, încurajarea, privilegiul sau ajutorul financiar pe care o organizație sau o persoană îi acordă altei persoane. În istoria artei, patronajul artelor se referă la sprijinul acordat regilor, papilor și bogați artiștilor cum ar fi muzicieni, pictori și sculptori. Se poate referi și la dreptul de a acorda oficii sau beneficii bisericești, afacerea dată unui magazin de către un client obișnuit și tutela sfinților. Cuvântul "patron" derivă din patronul latin, "patron", cel care oferă beneficii clienților săi. În unele țări termenul este folosit pentru a descrie patronajul politic, care este utilizarea resurselor de stat pentru a recompensa indivizii pentru sprijinul lor electoral.
