Cognomen

Cognomen

The cognomen of the Romans specified the branch of the family to which it belonged, or, in some cases, was the nickname of a particular individual; Only men carried it, because the women were designated only by the nomen. Like the agnomen, it used to designate physical characteristics - often with sarcasm - but unlike ours, it was inherited by the father. For example: ▪ Cayo Julius Caesar ▪ Marco Emilio Escauro There is a convention, not very strict, to name the Roman characters, which is the following: 1.- Those known, are designated by the nomen or cognomen; So, for example, Gaius Suetonius Tranquilus is called Suetonius or Lucius Anneus Seneca, his name is Seneca. However, others are known by their cognomen, as for example Lucio Sergio Catilina is only Catilina. 2. 2.
