Bitumen

Betún

Bitumen is a highly viscous, black, sticky organic liquid blend, completely soluble in carbon disulfide and composed mainly of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Bitumen is the residual fraction resulting from the fractional distillation of petroleum. It is the heaviest fraction and the one with the highest boiling point. It should not be confused with asphalt or tar. These mixtures of bituminous materials were used in constructions of roads and masonry, in Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. In addition, in Egypt, bitumen was used in mummification, until 3000 BC. It is also a mixture of tow, lime, oil and slag or ground glass, used to cover the joints of the bowls in the water pipes and for other hydraulic works. Most of the bitumens contain sulfur and several heavy metals like nickel, vanadium, Lead, chromium, mercury and also arsenic, selenium and other toxic elements. Bitumens can achieve a good conservation of plants and animals, which form fossils in the rocks.
