Fuga

Fuga is a musical procedure in which musical ideas called subjects are superimposed. Its composition consists in the use of the vertebrate polyphony by the counterpoint between several voices or instrumental lines based on the imitation or reiteration of melodies in different tonalities and in the structured development of the exposed subjects. When this technique is used as part of a larger piece, it is said to be a fugitive section or a fugato. A small leak is called fughetta. Until the end of the Middle Ages the term fugue was widely used to describe structures and canonical works, in Renaissance it served to designate specifically works based on imitation. It will not be until the seventeenth century that escape would take on the meaning that is maintained today.
