Tempering is the process of heating the quenched steel to below the austenite transition temperature, maintaining the high temperature for 1 to 2 hours after cooling. Tempering is often accompanied by quenching, and is the final process of heat treatment. After tempering, the structure of steel tends to be stable, its brittleness is reduced, toughness and plasticity are improved. Tempering will eliminate or reduce the quenching stress, stabilize the shape and size of the steel, and prevent deformation and cracking of the quenched parts. High temperature tempering also improves machinability. Depending on the heating temperature, the tempering is divided into: ▪ Low temperature tempering heating temperature is 150-200 ℃. The martensite produced by quenching remains the same, but the brittleness of the steel decreases and the quenching stress decreases. Mainly used for tools, rolling bearings, carburizing parts and surface hardening parts and other requirements of high hardness and high strength parts. ▪ Medium temperature tempering heating temperature is 350-500 ℃. Tempering is a mixture of acicular ferrite and fine granular cementite (Fe3C), called tempered martensite. Medium temperature tempering can obtain high elastic limit and toughness, mainly used for spring and hot abrasive tempering. High temperature tempering
