Descant ou discantus peut se référer à plusieurs choses différentes dans la musique, selon la période en question; Étymologiquement, le mot signifie une voix au-dessus ou enlevé des autres. Un discant est une forme de musique médiévale dans laquelle un chanteur a chanté une mélodie fixe, et d'autres accompagnés d'improvisations. La parole en ce sens provient du terme discantus supra librum et est une forme de chant grégorien dans laquelle seule la mélodie est notée, mais une polyphonie improvisée est comprise. Le discantus supra librum avait des règles spécifiques régissant l'improvisation des voix supplémentaires. Plus tard, le terme signifiait le chanteur des aigus ou soprano dans n'importe quel groupe de voix, ou la ligne supérieure dans une chanson. Finalement, par la Renaissance, le descant se référait généralement au contrepoint. De nos jours, le sens du contrepoint est le plus commun. Descant peut également se référer à l'ensemble le plus élevé d'un groupe d'instruments, en particulier le viol ou le graveur descendant. De même, il peut également être appliqué à la clef soprano. Descant peut également se référer à une mélodie florale élevée, chantée par quelques sopranos comme décoration d'un hymne.

A discant is a form of medieval music in which one singer sang a fixed melody, and others accompanied with improvisations. The word in this sense comes from the term discantus supra librum, and is a form of Gregorian chant in which only the melody is notated but an improvised polyphony is understood. The discantus supra librum had specific rules governing the improvisation of the additional voices. Later on, the term came to mean the treble or soprano singer in any group of voices, or the higher pitched line in a song. Eventually, by the Renaissance, descant referred generally to counterpoint. Nowadays the counterpoint meaning is the most common. Descant can also refer to the highest pitched of a group of instruments, particularly the descant viol or recorder. Similarly, it can also be applied to the soprano clef. Descant can also refer to a high, florid melody sung by a few sopranos as a decoration for a hymn.
