Dieser Anteil wird als sog. Ventilationskoeffizient angegeben. Atemzugvolumen, Totraumvolumen und andere Ventilationsgrößen werden mittels Spirometrie und Lungenventilationsszintigraphie ermittelt und geben Auskunft über die Leistungsfähigkeit der Lungen, die sog. Lungenfunktion. Bei den Ventilationsstörungen werden obstruktive- von restriktiven Ventilationsstörungen unterschieden, siehe auch respiratorische Insuffizienz.
