Foi introduzido em dezembro de 1802 e tornou-se a base de um sistema internacional moderno que classifica esses aerossóis troposféricos em várias formas ou categorias físicas, depois os classifica em famílias de baixa, média e alta, de acordo com a altitude da base da nuvem alcance a superfície da Terra.
