Um tributo é a riqueza, muitas vezes em espécie, que uma parte dá a outra como um sinal de respeito ou, como era frequentemente o caso em contextos históricos, de submissão ou fidelidade. Vários estados antigos exigiram tributo dos governantes da terra que o Estado conquistou ou de outra forma ameaçou conquistar.
