Climat
Clima este o măsură a modelului mediu de variație a temperaturii, umidității, presiunii atmosferice, vântului, precipitațiilor, numărului de particule atmosferice și altor variabile meteorologice într-o anumită regiune pe perioade lungi de timp. Clima este diferită de vreme, deoarece vremea descrie doar condițiile pe termen scurt ale acestor variabile într-o anumită regiune. Clima unei regiuni este generată de sistemul climatic, care are cinci componente: atmosferă, hidrosferă, criosphere, suprafață a pământului și biosferă. Clima unei locații este afectată de latitudinea, terenul și altitudinea acesteia, precum și corpurile de apă din apropiere și curenții acestora. Climatele pot fi clasificate în funcție de mediile și de intervalele tipice ale diferitelor variabile, cel mai adesea temperatura și precipitațiile. Schema de clasificare cea mai frecvent utilizată a fost inițial dezvoltată de Wladimir Köppen. Sistemul Thornthwaite, utilizat înca din 1948, încorporează evapotranspirația împreună cu informații despre temperatură și precipitații și este folosit în studierea diversității speciilor animale și a efectelor potențiale ale schimbărilor climatice.
