Un expert este o persoană recunoscută pe scară largă ca o sursă sigură de tehnică sau abilitate a cărei capacitate de a judeca sau de a decide în mod corect, drept sau cu înțelepciune îi este acordată autoritatea și statutul de către colegii sau publicul într-o anumită bine distins domeniu. Un expert, mai general, este o persoană cu cunoștințe sau capacități extinse bazate pe cercetare, experiență sau ocupație și într-un anumit domeniu de studiu. Experții sunt invitați pentru sfaturi în ceea ce privește subiectul lor, dar nu întotdeauna sunt de acord cu privire la particularitățile unui domeniu de studiu. Un expert poate fi crezut, în virtutea acreditării, instruirii, educației, profesiei, publicării sau experienței, de a avea cunoștințe speciale despre un subiect dincolo de cel al persoanei obișnuite, suficient pentru ca alții să se poată baza în mod oficial (și legal) asupra opiniei individului.
