Jurisdicția este autoritatea practică acordată unui organism juridic constituit în mod oficial sau unui lider politic care să se ocupe și să facă declarații pe probleme juridice și, implicit, să administreze justiția într-un domeniu de responsabilitate definit. Termenul este utilizat și pentru a desemna aria geografică sau obiectul la care se aplică această autoritate. Domeniile de competență se aplică la nivel local, de stat și federal. Jurisdicția se bazează pe principiul dreptului internațional public, pe conflictul de legi, pe legea constituțională și pe puterile ramurilor executive și legislative ale guvernului de a aloca resurse pentru a satisface cel mai bine nevoile societății sale native.
