Macawii sunt papagali lungi, adesea colorați, de papagali. Dintre numeroasele genuri Psittacidae, șase sunt clasificate ca macaws: Ara, Anodorhynchus, Cyanopsitta, Primolius, Orthopsittaca și Diopsittaca. Anterior, membrii genului Primolius au fost plasați în Propyrrhura, dar prima este corectă în conformitate cu regulile ICZN. Macaws sunt originari din America Centrală, America de Sud și fostul Caraibe. Cele mai multe specii sunt asociate cu pădurile, în special cu pădurile tropicale, dar altele preferă habitatele asemănătoare pădurilor sau savanelor. Proporțional, ciocurile mai mari, cozile lungi și suprafețele medii relativ goale, luminoase, disting macawele. Modelul penei facial al lui macaw este la fel de unic ca o amprentă. Cele mai mari macaws sunt Macaws-urile Hyacinth, Buffon și Green-Winged.
