Miraj
Un mirage este un fenomen optic natural, în care razele de lumină sunt îndoite pentru a produce o imagine deplasată a obiectelor îndepărtate sau a cerului. Cuvântul vine în limba engleză prin mirajul francez, de la mirari latine, însemnând "să privim, să ne mirăm". Aceasta este aceeași rădăcină ca și pentru "oglindă" și "pentru a admira". Spre deosebire de o halucinație, un miraj este un fenomen optic real care poate fi capturat pe cameră, deoarece razele luminoase sunt de fapt refractate pentru a forma imaginea falsă la locul observatorului. Ceea ce imaginea pare să reprezinte, totuși, este determinată de facultățile interpretative ale minții umane. De exemplu, imaginile inferioare de pe uscat pot fi confundate foarte ușor cu reflexiile dintr-un mic corp de apă. Mirajele pot fi clasificate drept "inferior", "superior" și "Fata Morgana", un fel de miraj superior care constă dintr-o serie de imagini neobișnuit de elaborate, stivuite vertical, care formează un miraj rapid în schimbare.
