Cyperaceae sunt o familie de plante de înflorire graminee monocotiledonate cunoscute sub denumirea de șuvițe, care seamănă superficial cu ierburi sau cu rugină. Familia este mare, cu aproximativ 5.500 specii descrise în aproximativ 109 de genuri, cel mai mare fiind genul Carex de "șarpe adevărate" cu peste 2.000 de specii. Aceste specii sunt distribuite pe scară largă, cu centrele de diversitate pentru grupul care apare în Asia tropicală și în America de Sud tropicală. În timp ce șarpele pot fi găsite în creștere în aproape toate mediile, multe sunt asociate cu zonele umede sau cu soluri sărace. Comunitățile ecologice dominate de șerpi sunt cunoscute sub denumirea de ghiveci. Caracteristicile care disting membrii familiei de șarpe de ierburi sau ruje sunt tulpini cu secțiuni transversale triunghiulare și frunze care sunt aranjate spiralat în trei rânduri. Unele șarpe bine cunoscute includ castanul de apă și țepul papirusului, din care a fost făcut materialul de scriere egiptean vechi. Această familie include, de asemenea, iarba de bumbac, vârf de vârf, grămadă de pământ, nutsedge sau nutgrass, și steaua albă.
