Un tribut este bogăția, deseori în natură, pe care una dintre părți o acordă altei persoane ca pe un semn de respect sau, așa cum se întâmplă adesea în contexte istorice, de supunere sau loialitate. Diferite state vechi au adus un omagiu de la conducătorii de terenuri pe care statul le-a cucerit sau le-a amenințat în alt mod să-l cucerească. În cazul alianțelor, partidele mai mici pot aduce un omagiu partidelor mai puternice ca semn de loialitate și adesea pentru a finanța proiecte care au beneficiat de ambele părți. Pentru a fi numit "tribut", în mod normal, este necesară recunoașterea de către plătitor a transmiterii politice către beneficiar; sumele mari, protejate în mod esențial de bani, plătite de imperiile romane și bizantine mai târziu popoarelor barbare pentru a le împiedica să atace teritoriul imperial, nu ar fi denumite de obicei "tribut", deoarece Imperiul nu a acceptat nicio poziție politică inferioară.
