PẤINE, pâini, s. f. 1. Aliment de bază al omului, preparat dintr-un aluat de făină (de grâu, de secară etc.) și ingrediente, afânat prin fermentația drojdiei, frământat cu apă și copt în cuptor; pită. ◊ Expr. A mânca pâine și sare (pe un sau dintr-un taler) cu cineva = a trăi împreună cu cineva, a împărți cu cineva binele și răul. A ieși înaintea cuiva sau a întâmpina (pe cineva) cu pâine și sare = a întâmpina (pe cineva) cu deosebită cinste. A avea (sau ține, a fi cu) pâinea și cuțitul în mână sau a pune mâna pe pâine și cuțit = a avea la îndemână toată puterea, toate mijloacele. (A fi) bun ca pâinea (cea) caldă (sau bună) = (a fi) foarte bun. A mânca o pâine albă = a avea o situație materială bună, a o duce bine. Se caută (sau se vinde) ca pâinea (cea) caldă, se spune despre o marfă foarte căutată și care se vinde foarte usor. A mânca pâine degeaba = a fi nefolositor. ♦ Aluat de faină frământat în vederea facerii pâinii (1). 2. Hrană necesară pentru trai; p. ext. mijloacele materiale necesare existenței; existență. ◊ Expr. O bucată de pâine sau pâinea zilnică, pâinea cea de toate zilele = mijloacele de existență. A lua (cuiva) pâinea de la gură = a lăsa pe cineva făra mijloace de trai, a lua (cuiva) toate posibilitățile de existență. ♦ Fig. Agoniseală. 3. (Reg.) Cereale, recoltă de cereale, grâne, bucate; p. restr. grăunțe de cereale (mai ales de grâu). 4. Slujbă, funcție, post. ◊ expr. A pune (sau a băga) în pâine (pe cineva) = a face cuiva rost de slujbă. A fi în pâine (sau a mânca o pâine) = a avea o slujbă. A scoate (sau a da afară) din pâine = a da pe cineva afară din serviciu. – Lat. panis.
