The jib is the name given to the first triangular front sail in a sailboat. A big jib at the top is called a yankee, a jib whose edge descends closer to the bridge is called a genoa. The smallest jib is called "tormentin". Other forward sails: the spinnaker, the staysail. In the traditional navy, the jibs are triangular forestay sails established between the bowsprit mast and the vertical mast that follows it: forehand on a three-masted or schooner, main mast on a cutter or ketch. From the front to the back of the ship, one can see the shin, the big jib, the jib, the jib and, on some ships, the staysail. In some rigs, one could also hoist over a flying jib. Many modern boats are equipped with a furling system, on which is scraped a genoa specially cut for this purpose and intended to replace the range of traditional jibs as the winding takes place. Depending on the wind force, these different jibs must have a progressively shallower cut and an increasingly stronger grammage.

Le foc est le nom donné à la première voile d'avant triangulaire endraillée d'un voilier. Un grand foc à point d'écoute haut s'appelle un yankee, un foc dont la bordure descend au plus près du pont s'appelle un génois. Le plus petit foc est appelé « tourmentin ». Autres voiles d'avant : le spinnaker, la trinquette. Dans la marine traditionnelle, les focs sont des voiles d'étai triangulaires établies entre le mât de beaupré et le mât vertical qui le suit : misaine sur un trois-mâts ou une goélette, grand mât sur un cotre ou un ketch. De l'avant vers l'arrière du navire, on distingue alors le clinfoc, le grand foc, le petit foc, le faux foc et, sur certains navires, la trinquette. Dans certains gréements, on pouvait aussi hisser au-dessus un foc volant. Beaucoup de bateaux modernes sont dotés d'un enrouleur, sur lequel est endraillé un génois spécialement taillé pour cet usage et destiné à remplacer la gamme des focs traditionnels au fur et à mesure de l'enroulement. En fonction de la force du vent, ces différents focs doivent avoir une coupe de plus en plus plate et un grammage de plus en plus fort.
