Marranos étaient à l'origine juifs vivant dans la péninsule ibérique qui se sont convertis ou ont été forcés de se convertir au christianisme, dont certains ont continué à pratiquer le judaïsme en secret. Le terme a été utilisé plus tard en 1492 avec le décret d'Alhambra castillan, inversant les protections à l'origine dans le traité de Grenade.
