Méandre
Un méandre, en général, est un virage dans un cours d'eau sinueux ou une rivière. Un méandre se forme lorsque le déplacement de l'eau dans un ruisseau érode les rives extérieures et élargit sa vallée, et la partie intérieure de la rivière a moins d'énergie et dépose le limon. Un flux de n'importe quel volume peut prendre un cours sinueux, érodant alternativement les sédiments de l'extérieur d'un virage et les déposant à l'intérieur. Le résultat est un schéma serpentant alors que le courant serpente en va-et-vient à travers son axe descendant. Quand un méandre est coupé du courant principal, un lac oxbow se forme. Au fil du temps, les méandres migrent en aval, parfois en peu de temps pour créer des problèmes d'ingénierie civile pour les municipalités locales qui tentent de maintenir des routes et des ponts stables. Il n'y a pas encore de cohérence complète ou de normalisation de la terminologie scientifique utilisée pour décrire les cours d'eau. Il existe une variété de symboles et de schémas. Les paramètres basés sur des formules mathématiques ou des données numériques varient aussi, selon la base de données utilisée par le théoricien. Sauf indication contraire dans un schéma spécifique "méandres" et "sinuosité" ici sont synonymes et signifient tout motif répétitif de virages ou de formes d'onde.
