Une année est la période orbitale de la Terre qui se déplace dans son orbite autour du Soleil. Pour un observateur sur la Terre, cela correspond à la période où il faut que le Soleil termine un cours à travers le zodiaque le long de l'écliptique. Dans les régions tempérées et sous-polaires, généralement quatre saisons sont reconnues: printemps, été, automne et hiver, marquées astronomiquement par le Soleil atteignant les points de l'équinoxe et du solstice, bien que les saisons climatiques soient en retard sur leurs marqueurs astronomiques. Dans certaines régions tropicales et subtropicales, il est plus courant de parler de la saison des pluies par rapport à la saison sèche.
