Apaisement, satisfaisant, calmant, apaisant - apaisement poursuivi par le gouvernement britannique du Premier ministre Neville Chamberlain, et plus tard, le gouvernement français du Premier ministre Édouard Daladier dans les années 1936-1939 contre l'Axe: Troisième Reich et l'Italie fasciste. Dans un sens plus large - un terme péjoratif pour compromettre les attitudes politiques envers les États agressifs. Selon Andrzej Nowak, la première manifestation de la politique d'apaisement était une offre que le Premier ministre britannique, David Lloyd George a fait la Russie soviétique 11 Juillet 1920. Lloyd George proponował nowym władzom bolszewickim w Moskwie, aby nieustalona wówczas jeszcze granica polsko-radziecka przebiegała wzdłuż linii Curzona. Oddanie Polski w ręce Rosji Radzieckiej miało w zamyśle Londynu zaspokoić Moskwę i powstrzymać ekspansję bolszewików w kierunku Europy Zachodniej. Bolszewicy z tej oferty nie skorzystali, ponieważ w ich planach było zdobycie Berlina i Niemiec. Kolejnym przejawem polityki appeasementu był brak reakcji na remilitaryzację Nadrenii w marcu 1936.
