Burlesc
Burlesque este o lucrare literară, dramatică sau muzicală destinată să provoace râs prin caricarea modului sau a spiritului lucrărilor serioase sau prin tratamentul ludic al subiecților lor. Cuvântul derivă din burlesco italiană, care, la rândul său, derivă din burla italiană - o glumă, ridicolă sau batjocură. Burlescul se suprapune în sens cu caricatură, parodie și travestiție și, în sensul său teatral, cu extravaganță, așa cum a fost prezentată în era victoriană. "Burlesque" a fost folosit în limba engleză în acest sens literar și teatral de la sfârșitul secolului al XVII-lea. A fost aplicată retrospectiv lucrărilor lui Chaucer și Shakespeare și clasicilor graeco-romani. Exemple contrastante ale burlescului literar sunt "The Rape of the Lock" al lui Alexander Pope și "Hudibras" de Samuel Butler. Un exemplu de burlesque muzical este Richard Strauss 1890 Burleske pentru pian și orchestră. Exemple de burlesques de teatru includ Robert D. Diavolul lui W. S. Gilbert și spectacolele lui A. C.
