Colonie
În politică și istorie, o colonie este un teritoriu aflat sub controlul politic imediat al unui stat, distinct de teritoriul de origine al suveranului. Pentru coloniile din antichitate, orașele-state își găseau deseori propriile colonii. Unele colonii erau țări istorice, în timp ce altele erau teritorii fără statalitate fermă de la începuturile lor. Statul metropolitan este statul care deține colonia. În Grecia Antică, orașul care a întemeiat o colonie a fost numit metropola. Țara mamă este o referire la statul metropolitan din punctul de vedere al cetățenilor care trăiesc în colonie. Există o listă a Națiunilor Unite cu teritorii ne-autonome. Spre deosebire de statul de marionetă sau de satelit, o colonie nu are o reprezentare internațională independentă, iar administrația sa de nivel înalt se află sub controlul direct al statului metropolitan.
