Colorant
Un colorant este o substanță colorată care are o afinitate față de substratul la care este aplicată. Colorantul este în general aplicat într-o soluție apoasă și necesită un mordant pentru a îmbunătăți rezistența colorantului pe fibră. Atât coloranții cât și pigmenții par a fi colorați, deoarece absorb mai multe lungimi de undă de lumină mai mult decât altele. Spre deosebire de un colorant, un pigment este, în general, insolubil și nu are afinitate pentru substrat. Unele coloranți pot fi precipitate cu o sare inertă pentru a produce un pigment la lac și pe baza sarei folosite pot fi lacuri de aluminiu, lac de calciu sau pigmenți cu lac de bariu. Vopselele de in vopsite au fost găsite în Republica Georgia datate într-o peșteră preistorică la 36.000 BP. Dovezile arheologice arată că, în special în India și în Phoenicia, vopsirea a fost efectuată pe scară largă de peste 5 000 de ani. Coloranții au fost obținuți din origine animală, vegetală sau minerală, fără nici o prelucrare foarte mică. De departe cea mai mare sursă de coloranți a fost din regatul plantelor, în special rădăcini, fructe de pădure, coajă, frunze și lemn, dar numai câteva au fost folosite vreodată la scară comercială.
