Termenul de mitologie se poate referi fie la o colecție de mituri, fie la studiul miturilor. O mitologie, în sensul unei colecții de mituri, este o trăsătură importantă a multor culturi. Potrivit lui Alan Dundes, un mit este o narațiune sacră care explică modul în care lumea și omenirea și-au asumat forma actuală, deși, într-un sens foarte larg, cuvântul se poate referi la orice poveste tradițională. Bruce Lincoln definește mitul drept "ideologie în formă narativă". Miturile pot apărea fie ca reprezentări veridice, fie ca o contorizare a evenimentelor istorice, ca alegorie pentru personificarea fenomenelor naturale sau ca o explicație a ritualului. Ei sunt obișnuiți să transmită experiență religioasă sau idealizată, să stabilească modele comportamentale și să învețe. Mitologiile moderne, cum ar fi romane fantastice, manga și legende urbane, cu multe mitoci recunoscute ca ficțiune, susțin ideea de mit ca o practică socială modernă, nu doar veche. Mitologia, în sensul studiului miturilor, datează din antichitate. Clasificarea rivală timpurie a miturilor grecești de Euhemerus, Platon's Phaedrus și Sallustius a fost dezvoltată de neoplatoniști și reînviată de mitografii Renașterii.

Prima definitie a mitului in dicționar este o poveste despre ființele supraomene ale unei vremuri mai vechi, luate de societatea preliterasă, ca fiind o relatare reală, de obicei despre felul în care au apărut fenomene naturale, obiceiuri sociale etc. O altă definiție a mitului este o persoană sau un lucru a cărui existență este fictivă sau nedovedită. Mitul este, de asemenea, o temă sau un tip de caracter care încorporează o idee.
