Secularismul este principiul separării instituțiilor guvernamentale și a persoanelor mandatate să reprezinte statul din instituțiile religioase și demnitarii religioși. O manifestare a secularismului afirmă dreptul de a nu fi supus regulilor și învățăturilor religioase sau, într-un stat declarat neutru în materie de credință, de la impunerea de către guvern a religiei sau practicilor religioase asupra poporului său. O altă manifestare a secularismului este opinia că activitățile și deciziile publice, în special cele politice, ar trebui să nu fie influențate de credințele și / sau practicile religioase. Secularismul își trage rădăcinile intelectuale de la filozofii greci și romani, cum ar fi Marcus Aurelius și Epicurus; de la gânditori ai Iluminismului, cum ar fi Denis Diderot, Voltaire, Baruch Spinoza, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson și Thomas Paine; și de la cei mai recenți și mai puțin atetici precum Robert Ingersoll și Bertrand Russell.
